Slavutych town in Chernobyl's shadow
"Liquidator" Alexander Demidov, 61, sits in front of a commemoration of the heroes that perished during the Chernobyl explosion in 1986. He was part of a massive team responsible for the clean up of the nuclear fallout in the months and years that followed.
He is posing in the main town square of Slavutych, his home for the last decades. He is suffering from multiple health problems in his lungs and joints.
Slavutych rises out of the ashes of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April 26, 1986. People living near the disaster area were largely moved to the new city, built from scratch for the sole purpose of housing the population displaced by the nuclear accident.
