Slavutych town in Chernobyl's shadow

Galina Sulinmova (R), 55, and her husband Valeri at their home in Slavutych, where they have been living for the last decades.

Galina Sulinmova was working at the Chernobyl power plant on the eve of the explosion in 26 April, 1986. It was her 25th birthday, and her supervisor sent her home to celebrate. Because of this, she escaped the disaster that killed the supervisor and her colleagues.

Valeri works as a senior manager responsible for the decommissioning of the Chernobyl power plant.

Slavutych rises out of the ashes of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April 26, 1986. People living near the disaster area were largely moved to the new city, built from scratch for the sole purpose of housing the population displaced by the nuclear accident.
